Evelyn Hernandez, 24, and her 5-year-old son Alexis went missing on May 1, 2002, just weeks before Evelyn was to deliver another baby boy. According to In Touch, her torso was discovered a month later, floating in the San Francisco Bay. Her murder remains unsolved, and her son and unborn baby have never been found.

Just months later, in December 2002, another expecting mother would also go missing, and her body would also be found along the shores of the San Francisco Bay. You have probably heard of Laci Peterson, whose husband Scott currently sits on death row at San Quentin Prison. Her case became a media sensation, making national news, while Evelyn’s case got very little coverage and is still largely unknown.

Evelyn Hernandez moved to the United States from El Salvador when she was 14. After graduating high school, she worked at a hotel and at Costco. Alta Online reports that she was excited about having her second child, whom she planned to name Fernando. Her boyfriend, Herman Aguilera, a 36-year-old limousine driver, was not happy about the pregnancy, and Evelyn eventually found out Herman was married.

Evelyn was last seen at her son Alexis’s school, Buena Vista Elementary, on May 1. Herman would report her missing on her due date, May 7. Several days later, Evelyn’s wallet would be found a few blocks away from the limousine company where Herman worked.

In Touch reports that Herman was heavily questioned by police, before he was eventually cleared. His wife provided his alibi.

Unlike Laci Peterson, Evelyn was an immigrant, and she didn’t have local family to advocate for her and drum up media attention. But her case remains unsolved, and her missing son and unborn baby have never been found. If he is still alive, Alexis would be 23 years old, and Fernando would be 18.
